Many students at the English Center have had professional experience or training in their native countries and are eager to gain experiential training in an American professional environment. Some will enter an American university after they graduate from the English Center, others may find work or continue to work in an international company in their home country. In either case, the Professional Practicum program offers an integrated approach to language and professional development.

English Center students have gained experience by volunteering as:

  • Legal Assistant for Amnesty International
  • Legal Assistant for the International Institute of the East Bay
  • Database Programmer for the Port of Oakland’s Information Technology Division
  • Website Developer for an online news outlet
  • Teaching Assistant for local pre-schools and elementary schools
  • Program Assistant at the English Center
  • Outreach and Recruitment Worker
  • Translator for Sungevity
  • Staff Member for the City of Oakland Mayor’s Office

High-intermediate level applicants who enroll for a minimum of 16 weeks and meet the English language requirements are eligible to participate in the Professional Practicum. The program is divided into two levels. The Level 4 Professional Practicum includes a class and a volunteer experience totaling 4 hours per week for approximately 14 weeks. Level 5 or 6 Practicum includes a class and a volunteer experience totaling 12 to 15 hours per week for approximately 14 weeks.

The Professional Practicum program builds upon the English Center’s strength integrating English language, computer, and career skills development into its curriculum. Students who do not meet the Professional Practicum English language requirements may have the opportunity to participate in the English Center’s ongoing Career classes. English Levels 1 through 3 include career classes in which students learn to identify career interests and options, write a resume and cover letter, and practice job interview skills. Selected Level 3 students may participate in the Professional Practicum. The Level 3 Job Search Preparation class includes an optional weekly 4-hour Executive Assistantship in which students work side-by-side with English Center employees on a variety of office administrative projects.
